You haven't had a new exhaust or part thereof replaced recently have you? I had a similar issue with the sealing paste used to join the sections. For weeks after it was fitted I smelled burning for a a short while after starting up. It's gone now.

The only new thing that I have on the car is a power steering pump. The fact that it started soon after having this fitted makes me think there may be a leak so that when the car is turned off for a while enough fluid leaks to make a burning smell for a second or so when the exhaust reaches temp. The car is booked in to be looked at on Wednesday - I'll post an update when I get it back...

OK... Got the car back from the garage yesterday. The burning smell was caused by a pipe behind the engine. When I asked what the cost of the work was I was told 'this is a service'. This is by the garage who replaced the power steering pump. So I am guessing that something was not put back right. Not too bothered as it's fixed with no extra cost. However... It has to go back at the end of feb for a leak from the gear selector. Seeing as they have to dismantle half the engine bay to reach it I am not looking forward to that cost. They have said parts will be cheap, but expect a lot of labour time...
